Museum Exhibition Displays

Project Description

With Zambesi as the subject of the exhibition, the exhibition explored the curious relationships between fabric and function, influential silhouettes and creative embellishment of stitch, print and texture. These are the essential elements to every Zambesi collection. With the works regarded as edgy and “darkly intelligent”, the combination of unexpected fabrics and details creating an enormous capacity to surprise, the design of the exhibition needed to be carefully considered. The display was intended to create a minimal, sleek and elegant look with clean lines and surfaces. The exhibition needed to be approachable to those that are knowledgeable within the fashion industry, but also for those that visit the museum and happen to stumble across the exhibition, not knowing much about fashion. With the entrance to both galleries being hidden from your initial approach, it required a high impact visual statement to draw people into the gallery. Due to the layout of the plinths in the gallery, the flowing kidney type shapes of the plinths and the dramatic lighting the visitor was automatically drawn into the gallery to explore it’s content. The design and layout also needed to be down to earth and simple, thus not to over complicate what already could be regarded as an highly intellectual experience. These materials were chosen because of the clean lines and surfaces, but also as these are seen to be used in the building industry. My biggest challenge with all exhibitions is how to prevent the public from touching artifacts and potentially damaging them, but not to the detriment of the story or the visitor. It proves an ongoing challenge and usually we tend to go for low barrier of some kind. But due to the nature of the display, I set out to investigate to go beyond a metal barrier of some kind and make it more accessible, still giving a sense of security to visitors who may have a problem when confronted with some of the material.
